Elected by the army following Jovian's death, Valentinian I was Roman emperor from 364 to 375. He made his brother Valens co-emperor, giving him rule of the eastern provinces while Valentinian retained the west. Valentinian's reign was spent constantly fighting invasions and rebellions. He died of a stroke while on campaign in modern-day Hungary in 375.
