Keep Shell Out of the Arctic! Tell Interior and Commerce to Keep Oil Drilling Out of the Polar Bear Seas The Interior and Commerce Departments have produced a draft environmental impact statement that grossly underestimates the risks of drilling in the Arctic. Tell officials to choose the "No Action" alternative and stop Big Oil, including Shell, from drilling in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. Polar bears are being gravely threatened by Shell Oil's plans to drill in the Arctic. Estimates put the risk of a spill at 75%, which would devastate the environment and the polar bears that call the Arctic home. Demand Big Oil is stopped from killing more polar bears.
Earlier this year, Shell Oil received preliminary approval to explore oil and natural gas resources in the Polar Bear Seas off the northern coast of Alaska. Now, President Obama is getting ready to make a final decision on drilling in the Arctic. We must stop Shell Oil from drilling in Alaska and prevent disaster for the polar bears and other animals that live in this fragile wilderness.
On New Year's Eve Shell's drilling rig, the Kulluk, ran aground near Kodiak, Alaska (latest in a series of mishaps ever since Shell was given government approval to explore for oil in the Arctic Ocean). Oil companies are not prepared for the Arctic Ocean. Tell president Obama to stop drilling NOW for the protection of this fragile environment until drilling operations can be conducted more safely, if at all.
