Book Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Young Adult, Reading List, Book Review, Favorite Book, Ya Book
I love the book cover designs of Rainbow Rowell's novels. They are inviting, colorful and tie in with the subject matter. The book cover of Fangirl was my sole reason for buying the book.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, 2013 ***** young adult. When a book is this good all I want to say is, READ IT.
Book Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Roswell - another exceptional young adult-ish book from Rainbow Rowell http://bookwi.se/fangirl/
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell - I can't get enough of this book right now! The 21 Best YA Books Of 2013. My favorite book
Fan-fiction fans will appreciate Rainbow Rowell's YA novel Fangirl, a rom-com novel about a young woman starting college who must decide if she's ready to leave her fangirl days behind and start living and writing her own story. For the first time in her life, she's dealing with strange roommates, love interests, being away from her dad and twin sister, and a professor who finds her favorite genre deplorable.........On my To Read list!
Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell | The 21 Best YA Books Of 2013 -On my "To Read" list!
"Best of" Books is a bloghop hosted by Diane Estrella at That's What I'm Here For Picking the 5 best YA books I have read this year is no easy task, there were so many good books to chose from. These are the ones I finally picked: Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein I loved Code Name Verity and was hesitant about this second WWII novel, but Elizabeth is genius and has written one of the most gripping novels about a young American female pilot who finds herself in Ravensbrück Concentration Camp. Rose Under Fire is definitely my favorite book of 2013. Read my review here Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell This was just such a fun novel to read, yet it opens up lots of questions about the legality/legitimacy of fan fiction. When twin Cath gets to college, she has a hard time making real friends and leaving the world of fanfiction writing behind, while her sister Wren has no problem leaving it behind for campus partying. Both girls have reasons to escape life, but both have some coming of age work to do. Fangirl is a novel very much of today. Maggot Moon by Sally Gardner This is an edgy novel set in a Nazi-like dystopian 1950s England. Standish Treadwell, 15, is a severely dyxlectic teen, with one brown and one blue and naturally, the brunt of bullying at school by both teachers and students. But when he befriends Hector, a new boy, things change. Read my review here The Archived by Victoria Schwab This first novel in a forthcoming series introduces us to a library of a different kind - a place where the dead are archived to preserve their stories. But sometimes they wander out of the archive and it is the job of Keepers to return them to the library. That's what MacKenzie Bishop, 15, does. She is the youngest Keeper ever and has some real conflicts of interest that interfere with her Keeper duties. Great science fiction, and I can't wait to read Book 2. Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz Imagine surviving 1 ghetto, 10 concentration camps and 2 death marches. In the novel based on a true story, this is exactly how Yanek Gruener spent his adolescence and survived to talk about it. Despite the horrors witnessed by Yanek, there are some read heartwarming moments in his young life. A definite must for fans of historical fiction. Book 1: The Reluctant Assassin by Eoin Colfer Shadow and Bone and Seige and Storm by Leigh Bardugo fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell Lockwood & Co. Book 1: The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud Seraphina by Rachel Hartman Code Name Verity by Nancy Werlin BEST ADULT BOOK APPROPRIATE FOR TEENS The Year of the Gadfly by Jennifer Miller
A friend of mine, a librarian actually, recently suggested to me the book Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell, a novel that has flown under my radar. I already had Fangirl on my list and was intrigued to discover they are by the same author. I recently picked up both novels at the library and since Fangirl is a 14 day borrow, I went with that one first. Two days! Done, in two days. Maybe the reason I enjoyed this book so much is because I can relate to the world of fandom. In fact, while I sit here typing, I'm staring down at my Harry Potter wand pen sitting on my desk. Yesterday, I nudged my son to do his current event homework on the new 'wizard chambers' at the Georgian House Hotel in London - because how cool is that!! I totally get the online fan clubs, the standing in line to watch the midnight premieres and the comic-con craze (although sadly I've never been to either.) However, what I have been completely oblivious to is the phenomenon of fanfiction. Up until reading this book, I thought all the re-writes my younger son does of Tolkien was just some cute hobby. Nope - it is a legitimate Internet craze. Fangirl is about twin sisters, Cath and Wren, who set off for freshmen year of college. Cath is a successful fanfiction writer of a popular series, (think Harry Potter with a touch of Twilight thrown in) but struggles with her confidence and belief that she can actually write anything original herself. It touches on their estranged relationship with their mother and all the abandonment issues that come along with having an absent parent, while their unstable father tries to hold it all together. For me the best part of the plot was the young-love story between Cath and...well, don't want to spoil that for you. But, I will say, this love-interest of hers kind of made me wish I went to school in Nebraska! Rowell does a wonderful job of writing this amazingly sweet relationship. There's a lot going on in this story and momentum stays strong throughout. However, I kept waiting for the big climax to happen. Well, instead of one defining moment, there are several small a-ha moments throughout the novel which helps move the plot forward and keeps the reader's attention. Personally, I can't say I'm interested in reading any fanfiction (unless written by my son), despite agreeing that it is an interesting culture in and of itself. I would just pick it apart and be resentful - guess I'm too loyal to the real authors. Fangirl is a light, easy read and completely relatable. Those who "get" the whole world of fandom will appreciate it the most, but, I also think this is a great read for all teens and adults who enjoy YA novels. Read more of my Book Reviews.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern was such a beautiful read about a circus that comes to town randomly and is open only from dusk to dawn. Also, Celia and Marco are swept up in a challenge where they are unsure of all the rules. . . Written with the most beautiful imagery, I literally want to start wearing only black and white with a red accent piece.

It's All About Books: Book Review: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Book: Obsidian Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout Series: The Lux Publisher: Entangled Teen Format: Paperback Pages: 335 Source: Purchased Blurb: Starting over sucks. When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up. And then he opened his mouth. Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me. You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades. If I don't kill him first, that is. My Rating: I should probably start off by saying that I had my doubts about this book. I tend to dislike books everyone raves about and the hype surrounding this book (and the entire series thus far) has been insane. The hype almost scared me off from reading this and I'm actually really glad that I picked it up because I absolutely loved it. It was nice to see a book about aliens in YA instead of the usual vampires/werewolves/faeries which make up the stories for a lot of the genre. Really how many alien young adult books are out there? I can't think of many. And the fact that there were good aliens and bad aliens just made the story even better. I loved the plot. Also the story behind the aliens was extremely well thought out and didn't sound ridiculous and was completely original. I loved the fact that different aliens had different powers and no two had the same level of power. Yet even with this they all blended into human society quite well. I loved Katy. She was obsessed with books, had a book review blog and didn't put up with any of Daemon's crap. Because trust me there was a ton of crap from him. That boy seriously got on my nerves in the beginning, to the point where I wanted to smack him. He eventually grew on me when the other, nicer side of him made appearances. When I finished this book I went out and ordered Onyx, the second book in the series. I can't wait to start it and I hope this series just gets better and better.

Pure, by Julianna Baggott. If you liked The Hunger Games, you might try this one. It's a very good Young Adult post-apocalyptic novel. Its technical themes include nanotechnology and the effects of atomic bombs.
2013 Alex Award Winner, Pure by Julianna Baggott. Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet, she thinks about what is lost--how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies.
Pure, by Julianna Baggott. If you liked The Hunger Games, you might try this one. It's a very good Young Adult post-apocalyptic novel.
On my summer reading list, comparable to The Hunger Games, but with its own unique twists. The first in a series.
Pure, by Julianna Baggott The Hunger Games was the first really unique book I read in a very long time. Pure is no less unique; it's familiar but oh, so very different and moving.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life--and she's really good at it. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath's twin sister, Wren, has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone.

To-Read List: Love Letter to the Dead - Ava Dellaira
If you're looking for a novel that will linger with you for days, The Children's Book Review's best selling Ya book is Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira.
I'm not typically too picky about YA book covers, but the covers I've listed below have really stood out and deserve some recognition.
Title: Love Letters to the Dead Author: Ava Dellaira Publisher: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux (BYR) Publication Date: April 1, 2014 It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May did. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to people like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Amelia Earhart, Heath Ledger, and more; though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating new friendships, falling in love for the first time, learning to live with her splintering family. And, finally, about the abuse she suffered while May was supposed to be looking out for her. Only then, once Laurel has written down the truth about what happened to herself, can she truly begin to accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was; lovely and amazing and deeply flawed; can she begin to discover her own path. My Review Love Letters to the Dead is one of those books that you won't want to put down, but you want to read it like you're pouring honey in winter - slowly. I wanted to cherish every single moment that I had with Laurel because I knew it would end all too soon, and I didn't really want it to end. I wanted to learn as much as I could about Laurel and her friends and family. I wanted to understand everything that made her tick. The characters in this stunning debut novel are fantastic. The plot is raw and real. I felt like what happened to Laurel could have happened to anyone I went to high school with because it's not too far removed from what happens to some teens. (I would know... My cousin died when she was thirteen, and seeing how her sister reacted was devastating.) I think the story of my cousins is part of the reason why I was so involved in this novel. I would recommend this novel to any teenager or adult who is looking for something realistic to read. I'd also recommend it to anyone who has ever lost someone unexpectedly because there is real pain in that, and I was able to really feel Laurel's pain as she grieves for her sister. It's a remarkable book that everyone should read. Love Letters to the Dead is beautifully written, and reminded me very much of one of my favorite books, The Perks of Being a Wallflower because it deals with growing up and dealing with some challenging situations. It's also an epistolary novel (just like Perks), and because of that, you feel an immediate connection to Laurel. Read this book. You won't regret it.

I READ IT: The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. A book that my mom loves. 5th book read for the MMD Challenge.
The Storyteller - Jodi Picoult. I had given up on Jodi Picoult's books but I really enjoyed this. It's like several different stories with unifying themes. Very clever and engaging.
My first Jodi Picoult book. Part of it is about the modern-day protagonist working in a bakery, part of it is about her grandmother's experiences during the Holocaust, and the other part is the vampire-ish story her grandmother wrote as a teenager. Weird mix of non-fiction, historical fiction, and fiction. But it works.
The Storyteller: Jodi Picoult This book reminds me why I love this author! Could not put it down! 3/3/13
The Storyteller – Jodi Picoult. AN ABSOLUTE MUST-READ! One of my favorite books of all time
The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult...I thought this book was beautifully written. As always, Jodi Picoult tackled a tough subject with great imagination and finesse. To be taken to Auschwitz and its horrors in such a personal way was riveting. The reader feels the pain of the prisoners. And to align it with the fictional story written by the survivor and her granddaughter's current situation was fascinating. This will rank on my "one of the best books I've read" list.

Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her. At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city's top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor's impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared. As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.
