Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii- - I promised info on how close visitors are allowed to go onto a volcano. The answer on the volcanoes in Italy (i.e.Vesuvius, Pompeii) is that they have tour buses to take visitors to the site and people are allowed to go up to the top. I didn't see info on Kilauea specifically, but I'm going to take an "educated-guess" and say that sounds like it would be a common practice.
