Lamia and the Soldier - John William Waterhouse. Another physical and emotional protection painting, where it looks like the female figure is seducing the knight by caressing his arm and looking up at him longingly in plea. If this wasn't a mythological story, I would've said they were lovers and that she was pleading him to not go to battle. However, Lamia was said to be a child-eating demon, much like a mermaid, cunningly tempting men to their deaths.

John William Waterhouse: Lamia and the Soldier, 1905. "Eyed like a peacock, and all crimson barr'd; And full of silver moons, that, as she breathed, Dissolv'd, or brighter shone, or interwreathed Their lustres with the gloomier tapestries- So rainbow -sided, touch'd with miseries, She seem'd, at once, some penanced lady elf, Some demon's mistress, or the demon's self." -John Keats, 'Lamia'
