    Cream of Tartar, not tartar sauce. Look in the spice section of your grocery store.

    I make Continental frosting (commonly called gravy frosting way back when). Butter, sugar, vanilla and a milk/flour roux whipped in. No eggs. Light and fluffy and heavenly.

    My mother used to substitute maple or peanut butter instead of vanilla. Apple sauce spice cake with the maple or peanut butter frosting is heavenly.

    it's delicious and if used with vegetable shortening much healthier... no icing recipe is going to be healthy... the store bought ones contain way worse.

    vegetable shortening is completely hydrogenated JUST like the weird fat they use to make store-bought. At least butter is a real food. I'll take that any day.

    Butter is far more healthy a choice than vegetable shortening. YIKES! Vegetable shortening is all Trans Fat.
