Portrait of Maria de' Medici (1540-1557) or Eleonora di Garzia di Toledo (1553–1576), Alessandro Allori, detail

An Unknown Lady, formerly call Mary Queen of Scots by an Unknown Artist, c.1560. (National Portrait Gallery, London)

Queen Mary of Hungary and Bohemia, wife of Louis II, daughter of Philip I of Castile and his mad wife Joanna. She was governor of the Netherlands for almost 25 years. Guardian and aunt of the Christina of Denmark who later turned down Henry VIII's proposal, citing her deficiency of heads. Quite an accomplished woman and a significant, if now forgotten, figure in 16th century European life.
