Pittsburgh Pirates Founded in 1887 as the National League Pittsburgh Alleghenies because of the local river. In 1891, when the players' league folded, players were assigned to NL teams. But Pittsburgh signed away one who'd been promised to the Philadelphia Athletics and their owner disparagingly called the Pittsburgh team pirates.
