Joseph Mallord William Turner Eruption of Vesuvius, 1817, oil on canvas, Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, CT. J. M. W. Turner was an English Romantic landscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. He is commonly known as “the painter of light” and his work regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.

William Turner (1775-1851) English landscape artist who was ahead of his time. Very controversial in his day, he elevated landscape painting to rival historical paintings. Many scholars believe that he was the Romantic predecessor to Impressionism. Often called 'the painter of light'. I love the brilliant colors in this piece, and the light that it emits.
