I have a raised bed garden as well. You definitely need to weed; however, by spreading newspaper on the ground, you shouldn't have as many. A good irrigation system is also important.

Should we be concerned with any chemicals, finishes, etc. that may be in furniture wood?

I have tried this with dresser drawers- they warped and fell apart from the moisture. The joints need to be reinforced and the wood treated or sealed in some way.

I tried it too- same result. I've got the remainder of the piece tied together and a big zucchini plant is growing in it. But it will only look like the pictures until the first rainfall. Then the furniture will warp and fall apart.
