Part of the superstructure of the under-construction Manhattan Bridge rises above Washington Street in New York, on June 5, 1908.

1877: A group of men pose on one of the cables on the Brooklyn Bridge mid-construction. 5,000 strands of steel wire make up the massive cables of the bridge. It took 14 years to complete construction.

This picture was taken in 1864, during the Civil War. It shows a fortified bridge over the Cumberland river near Nashville, Tennessee. Perhaps similar to the bridge that Ambrose Bierce described in his story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge."
