Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. My childhood book. My mom read it to me every night.
Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. One of my favorite kids book!
“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.” You’ll probably recognize those words from Robert Munsch’s children’s book, Love You Forever. It’s among the best-selling kids’ books of all time, but it still tends to provoke very different responses among parents.
Recently over at Slate, Gabriel Roth made a very good argument for the basic awfulness of Janette Sebring Lowrey's The Poky Little Puppy, postulating that the only reason that book and books like it persist in our cultural consciousness is because of the nostalgia effect -- my mom read this to me, so I'd better read it to my kids, etc. But there is another way! Why not replace some of those canonical (but actually boring, or lame, or morally questionable) kids' books with some better ones, and stop the nostalgia cycle in its tracks? To that end, please find below a list of canonical children's books that could be retired, and which books, new and old, to read instead.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (and series) are my current favorite books. I read the entire series in less than a week. Afterwards, I watched the movie and was highly disappointed. There was so many details lacking and it drove me insane. I guess that's why i prefer books to movies.

Of Mice And Men, Books Movies, John Steinbeck, High School, Books I Ve, Books Books, Favorite Books
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a brilliant novella of two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression. Their unlikely friendship, which began by chance and was sustained by mutual hope, was ultimately tested by unthinkable tragedy. (If you had to read it in high school, read it again from an adult perspective! It's such a good read!)
Of Mice and Men | John Steinbeck 1937 – Lenny is the main character of this novel and has a mental disability. This is a very iconic book that paints lenny as short of a bad guy with good intentions. I think if we stray away from this notation of people with disabilities we will be able to grow as a community, but I still love this book
Of Mice and Men | John Steinbeck 1937- SADDEST BOOK YOU WILL EVER READ. but amazing work of literature

Of Mice and Men book cover
Image from Wikimedia Commons George and Lennie are drifters in the world, bouncing from site to site and seeking a place to call their own. So they form a plan, a plan to gather up enough money to build their own little paradise. But as they soon come to know, "the best-laid schemes of mice and men often go awry". --Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck I respect books. Books contain whole worlds in them, the lives of whole crowds of characters. Respect the books, I say, because they're the container that holds the minds of their authors. And then I read Of Mice and Men. And stifled the urge to fling it across the room. This is one of the most infuriating books I have ever read, and it's only a hundred-or-so pages long. Now, to pack that much emotion into such little space is a feat, which is probably why John Steinbeck's writing is so renowned, but it isn't without problems. It uses racist language and slings random vulgarities around without remorse. Innocent puppies and mice are killed. It gets almost preachy at times, giving the reader the mental image of Steinbeck standing on a soapbox and hollering through a bullhorn. Then there is, of course, the small problem of how strong it is. Problem? you ask. Yes, a huge blockade of a problem. Much like Lennie in the story, the book is almost unknowingly powerful. Withing five pages, you find yourself rooting for and sympathizing with simple-minded Lennie and clever George, even without knowing their backstory or knowing much about how they got to the point where they were trekking miles to find a ranch to work at. Of Mice and Men is like a Greek tragedy in every way (barring the minor alteration of it being an American novel), from the three-act structure it's set up in to the sudden, almost startling ending of the story. It isn't as though the ending was unexpected, for it wasn't, since from the very beginning you sense that something isn't quite right but you stifle to feeling just to carry on optimistically wishing the characters success. Nay, the ending is startling because the sheer emotion hits you with all the subtlety of a bulldozer. And then it hits you, the reader, that you should have seen this coming. Of Mice and Men is a great novel. Perhaps not superb, or anything, but it's incredibly styled and it carries a weighty message with a realistic theme. Maybe real life doesn't have any such thing as foreshadowing, maybe if the story were set in modern times Lennie would have been locked up for animal abuse, but it is realistic in at least one respect: It tells you that there's no such thing as a happy ending. --Aishwarya Jayadeep
