Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak... One of my favorite books. It's Russian, so of course there is a tragic element to it, but it's seriously one the best books. It takes place in Russia before, during, and after the Revolution. It's about a man named Yury Zhivago who is swept up in the tumult of his country's struggles, as well as his own. He first falls in love with his childhood friend Tania, but even that is eclipsed when he meets the beautiful and mysterious Lara. It's an amazing book.
One of my favorite books - one of my favorite movies. I've met Omar Shariff...may I say: WOW :)
My favourite piece of Russian literature. A man trapped in the history of the Russian Revolution, from the optimism of its conception to its brutal reality.

The Black History of the White House (City Lights Open Media): Clarence Lusane: #blackhistory This book is an eye opener. I am a layman, not a college professor, or a huge intellect...just a person that likes to read. It is a history book about African-Americans in relation to the White House, beginning with a slave who escaped from George Washington! The reasoning was amazing in this incident. READ more
White House Easter egg roll, 1898 This photograph was taken at the 1898 White House Easter egg roll. William McKinley was the president. At the end of the nineteenth century, few African Americans were permitted to visit the White House. As the [above] photo indicates, however, black children were allowed to attend the White House’s annual Easter egg-rolling ceremony. Black children and white children playing on the White House premises one day a year was acceptable.

Worth reading, swear.
Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond - The book attempts to explain why Eurasian civilizations (in which he includes North Africa) have survived and conquered others, while refuting the assumption that Eurasian hegemony is due to any form of Eurasian intellectual, moral or inherent genetic superiority. Diamond argues that the gaps in power and technology between human societies originate in environmental differences, which are amplified by various positive feedback loops.
