An ant mill starts when a group of army ants are separated from the main foraging party and lose the pheromone track, start following one another, forming a continuously rotating circle. This is a side effect of the self-organizing structure of ant colonies. When the ants become locked into a circular mill, some might be able to escape, but the majority will stay in the mill and eventually die from exhaustion
