The final book in the Partials series. Love this YA series about discrimination and loyalty and peace.
Ruins, by Dan Wells (released 3/11/14). Book 3 of the Partials series. Samm is trapped on the far side of the continent, and Kira is in the hands of Dr. Morgan, who is hell-bent on saving what's left of the Partials. The only hope lies with the scattered people of both races who seek a way to prevent the rapidly escalating conflict. But in their midst appears a mysterious figure, neither human nor Partial, with solemn warnings of a new apocalypse - one that none of them may be able to avert.

Dystopian Book, Young Adult, Partials Book, Book Review, Reading List, Hunger Games, Ya Book
Partials (book 1): I recommend the whole series. Of all of the dystopian book series cluttering up the new book section at BN, this one is probably one of the most unique. I loved it and Billy loved it. For a more in depth assessment, check my Goodreads account.
Partials by Dan Wells. I started it today so it technically isn't on my "to read" list, however I haven't read enough to say that it is a must read or not. I will say that so far, 20 pages in, it is different than most dystopian type books I've read so far, so my hope are high!
YA Book Review: Partials by Dan Wells - The mystery surrounding the partials and the investigation of the RM virus were both very interesting to read about, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read. Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with partials--engineered organic beings identical to humans--has decimated the world’s population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. The threat of the partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to the disease in over a decade. Humanity’s time is running out. When sixteen-year-old Kira learns of her best friend’s pregnancy, she’s determined to find a solution. Then one rash decision forces Kira to flee her community with the unlikeliest of allies. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that the survival of both humans and partials rests in her attempts to answer questions of the war’s origin that she never knew to ask. Combining the fast-paced action of The Hunger Games with the provocative themes of Battlestar Galactica, Partials is a pulse-pounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question--one where our sense of humanity is both our greatest liability, and our only hope for survival. Review Trying to save her best friend from loosing her baby to an omnipresent deathly virus, Kira sets out to seek answers and a cure by finding those thought responsible for all this - the Partials. Yet it soon turns out that not all is as it seems, on both sides, humans and Partials. With a gripping plot, which personally I haven't seen in a similar variation in any other book in the latest flood of YA dystopian novels, Partials by Dan Wells was like being sucked into the middle of an action movie. Twists and turns along the way, some a bit foreseeable, though that might have just been me, there was one particular thing that honestly surprised me. For once an author didn't rely on some love triangle to keep the story's momentum, and I applaud this decision. Still I would have expected the somewhat troubled relationship between Kira and Marcus to be a bit more emotional and less mellow, just the same I think it's a shame that the partial boy Samm didn't get explored further in his uniqueness. Maybe the sequel will make me happy in that regard. Last but not least, fiction might not always be realistic, but if a girl solves within days what plenty of doctors couldn't in a decade, one should think that the medical terms had received a more serious approach instead of the "kiddie talk". In short: Fast paced and action packed this book has great movie potential! 3/5 stars Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the NetGalley book review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Just learned that studies have shown that immersion in books/movies changes the activity in the brain. Activity moves from "self" part to "others." This ultimately means people can take on the personality of the protagonist & see from their eyes briefly. This is so important for building empathy! Art is important. -krys

I read Shakespeare for a book report last year. We could choose our own books, as long as they were our level. Some people read Hunger Games, Harry Potter or the Maze Runner and stuff. Nope. The Taming of the Shrew for me. Nobody knew what that was, and I'm sure everybody was silently judging me. (It was really really good though!!!!) ~SS

I do voluntarily read books and I dont care if you make fun of me for it because thats just who I am. I love to read and hate that when people see me reading in public they ask me if I'm reading for school because they just automatically think that is the only possible reason why someone would be reading a book

Definitely a book worth reading. It is a different kind of book and requires an open mind. But a great one none the less.
"The Hunger Games is a fun series, but Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" is an earlier and equally disturbing book about a dystopian society in what was once the United States."
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood: a great dystopian novel about gender politics, sexuality, and freedom to vs. freedom from
I know The Hunger Games made dystopian novels popular again, but so many of the newer ones are really bad (read: everything BUT the Hunger Games). If you're looking for a real dystopian novel, read The Handmaid's Tale.
"The Handmaid's Tale" is a disturbing book about a dystopian society in what was once the United States.
My all time favourite book to-date. Every re-read is as enticing and captivating as the last.
The Handmaid's Tale: if you have not read this book, read it now.
The Handmaid's Tale-my favorite book.
This month I've been participating in a read-along over at Classic Reads Book Club. We've been reading The Handmaid's Tale and will be wrapping it up discussions on Sept. 27. So if you've read if before and want to chime in, please do! That being said, here are my thoughts on the book. The Haidmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood ★★★★★ Offred is a handmaid's whose story unfolds in Atwood's famous dystopian novel. She lives in a world run by men, where women are powerless. They've lost their right to make decision, to learn how to read and even to have a job. The rulers claim they have "freed" the women from the painful tasks of having to find a husband or take care of themselves. Any women who are fertile are turned into handmaids and assigned to a home where they are forced to bear children for a married couple. When I began the book I assumed this was a dystopian set decades in the future, where the women had no memory of life as we know it. I quickly learned that Offred used to have a job, money of her own, a husband and child, etc. The decline into her current policed state was swift and terrifying. I loved Atwood's bleak prose. Offred's resignation and despair were palpable. The tense relationships between the characters were thrilling. Offred was forced to walk a tight rope of suspicion in every conversation, never knowing who she could trust. In one scene Offred is using butter she hid and saved from a meal as lotion on her skin. It's been so long since she's been anything but the potential carrier of a child that the concept of being loved is almost obsolete to her now. She says... "As long as we do this, butter our skin to keep it soft, we can believe that we will some day get out, that we will be touched again, in love or desire." It was the small acts of rebellion like this, breed from a spark of hope, that made Offred such a heartbreaking character. After Offred loses her ability to support herself she struggles in her relationship with her husband. That shift of dependance in their relationship changed everything... "We are not each other's, anymore. Instead, I am his." I can't recommend this book highly enough. Though it's 25 years old, it's more relevant than ever. Atwood's writing reveals the story bit by bit, allowing the horror of the changed society to creep up slowly. The story is masterfully told, creating a chilly world that's a far too easy to imagine.

Red Queen | Victoria Aveyard | 9781409151173
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is a teen-based book. It follows along with many of the book series out now about a dystopic society of Reds and Silvers. There are 2 groups in society, the Reds who do the manual work, and the Silvers who are the royalty. There is more to it. The Silvers each have unique powers of some kind whereas the Reds don't. Until by chance a Red girl named Mare discovers she has powers. This changes things dramatically. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062310631/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0062310631&linkCode=as2&tag=simpbrea-20&linkId=CP34YMIIJKXTXKP3 Overall, I was drawn into this story. I enjoyed the interaction between the different characters. The storyline is somewhat predictable but there are twists thrown in. I have also already put the sequel, The Glass Sword, on my Good Reads list to read when it comes out in 2016.
