Peruvian Textiles This design highlights the bowler hats worn by Peruvian indigenous people. According to one of several explanations, a shipment of bowler hats was sent from Europe for use by Europeans who were working on the construction of the railroad. The hats were found to be too small and were distributed to locals.
Peruvian textiles probably at Pisac market.Assortments like this are probably sold by merchants who tend to exploit, the people. The belts look authentic, made by Inca villagers today but the weavers probably received little return. Some of the mantas (see left) are made with synthetic yarns, some even in factories. Better to buy the finest naturally-dyed textiles made by weavers associated with The Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco, its museum & gift shop is at 603 Av Sol, Cusco.
