John Gregg - Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a member of the Provincial Congress of the Southern Confederacy in Montgomery, Alabama and later in Richmond, Virginia. He resigned his congressional seat, formed the 7th Texas Infantry and was commissioned Brigadier General in September 1862. While fighting in the Battle of Richmond, Virginia, October 7, 1864, he was killed in action on the field at age 36.

Union General Henry Baxter was appointed Brigadier General March 12th 1863 after being wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg.

Daniel Ruggles (1810 –1897) Massachusetts Brigadier General (CSA). West Point Class of 1836. A veteran of the Second Seminole and Mexican Wars. Appointed a brigadier general, he commanded a division at the Battle of Shiloh. Held administrative positions for the remainder of the war.

The first Union soldier killed by a Confederate soldier was Thornsbury Bailey Brown; he was killed May 22nd 1861 in Taylor County, Virginia.
