A recently constructed section of the controversial US-Mexico border fence expansion project crosses previously pristine desert sands at sunrise on March 14, 2009 between Yuma, Arizona and Calexico, California. The new barrier between the US and Mexico stands 15 feet tall and sits on top of the sand so it can lifted by a machine and repositioned whenever the migrating desert dunes begin to bury it. The almost seven miles of floating fence cost about 6 million dollars per mile to build.
The border between the United States and Mexico stretches 3,169 kilometers (1,969 miles), crossing deserts, rivers, towns, and cities from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico. Every year, an estimated 350 million people legally cross the border, with another 500,000 entering into the US illegally. No single barrier stretches across the entire border, instead, it is lined with a patchwork of steel and concrete fences, infrared cameras, sensors, drones, and nearly 20,000 U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Abandoned Places | Mental Floss
There is a slowly sinking city in the desert of southern Namibia, Africa, a ghost town called Kolmanskop. In the 1900s, diamonds were discovered just sitting upon the sand, waiting to be found, so people from all over the world with diamond fever flocked from the port of Lüderitz to the once desolated lonely desert. Kolmanskop became a mining town, but after the First World War when diamonds sales dropped, the sand-clearing squad failed to show up. That was the beginning of the end;

In the constant waves of sand from the 7,605,000 acres (3,077,700 ha) of the South Namib Desert, a creepy ghost town is slowly being devoured by the desert. Caught between appearing eerie and cool, the sand dunes are moving into this house and slowly burying it in Kolmanskop ghost town. Namib Sand Sea was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2013. U.S. Oregon, August 1939. "Unemployed lumber worker goes with his wife to the bean harvest. Note Social Security number tattooed on his arm". Millions of people were unemployed and homeless during the Great Depression, which lasted from 1930 until the mid-1940s. Many, such as this couple, lived in tent communities known as "Hoovervilles."

King Richard III's face revealed after 500 years - The face of England's King Richard III was revealed for the first time in more than 500 years on Tuesday following a reconstruction based on a skull unearthed from a parking lot in the city of Leicester. After carrying out a series of scientific investigations on bones exhumed from the site last year, the University of Leicester announced on Monday that the remains belonged to Richard III, who died in battle in 1485.

Many animal lovers find it hard to part with their pets when they die. So when cat Orville, named after the famous aviator Orville Wright, was run over by a car, his artist owner decided to turn him into a permanent piece of artwork as the ultimate tribute by transforming him into a flying helicopter. Dutch artist Bart Jansen first stuffed Orville before teaming up with radio control helicopter flyer Arjen Beltman to build a specially-designed flying mechanism to attach to the cat.

Fake - Richard Silvera's work titled "The Sweet Escape". He states "This image is a composite of 2 pictures. The picture of the sky and clouds was taken by me from an airplaine, and the shuttle is a picture from NASA. Then the assembly was done in Photoshop Lightroom."
Joshua Evans at Fave Thing: "It's a fake. I wish it wasn't. Sorry folks, it's a fake. The photo of the sky and clouds was taken from a plane by Richard Silvera while the image of the Space Shuttle was sourced from NASA. International Space Station astronaut Aki Hoshide, from Japan, recorded this striking image earlier this month while helping to augment its capabilities. Visible in this out worldly composition: Sun, Earth, 2 portions of robotic arm, astronaut's spacesuit, deep darkness of space, and unusual camera taking the picture. Expedition 32 mission ended yesterday when attached capsule undocked with ISS and returned members of expedition to Earth - Hoshide is still circling 253 miles above. #selfportrait
Earth and the ISS as reflected in a spacewalker's helmet. This photo of Aki Hoshide blows my mind. During a September 5th spacewalk with +Sunita Williams he snapped this self portrait revealing the international space station orbiting the earth. Absolutely stunning.
