works pretty well. I just did this yesterday. But it's kinda hard to make designs and the nail polish has to be thin enough to spread across the surface of the water. turned out great, though!

Its called water marbling! It's a hard technique to get down but once you do it is well worth it. I learned by watching videos on youtube. : )
