Photo taken at an old children's mental hospital.
This image shows the 'order' of a mental hospital and the reason i found it interesting is because when this was taken, at Blackpool Mental Asylum in 1921, the nurses claimed to be 'treating' the patients, when in actual fact they where locking them away like animals.

Aspen Forest by Chad Galloway I love birch trees! But even more I love photos that have not been photoshopped yet still focus on one beautifully bright color such as these autumn leaves. It brings such a contrast to the trees while not focussing the picture on leaves on the ground.

1913 - After parcel post service was introduced in 1913, at least two children were sent by the service. With stamps attached to their clothing, the children rode with railway and city carriers to their destination. The Postmaster General quickly issued a regulation forbidding the sending of children in the mail after hearing of those examples.

"Carrying Her Shoes Home From Church":: 7.1936 Photo by Dorothea Lange. This is still done here in Madagascar by some living here in the highlands. Not only does it save ware and tear on your shoes but you can arrive with clean shoes and its much easier to wash your foot than your shoe before entering a building.
Dorothea Lange "Never Been Out of Mississippi" - I feel that this image is so liberating to this woman, and African Americans at this time. She was giving this woman a form of equality. She photographed her from slightly below, giving the woman a greater height, empowering her. She is also making direct eye contact, which makes it a strong composition.

Storyville was the red-light district of New Orleans from 1897-1917. Jazz flourished and Louis Armstrong grew up playing there. It was closed down by demand of the Army and Navy during WWI on the basis of public health.

Elephant in Tiger Skin: Old Photos of New Orleans (& LA)
From luxurious palaces to decaying shacks, a series of intimate black and white photographs taken in 1912 reveal how New Orleans' prostitutes lived more than a century ago. With his sunjects in varying states of undress, photographer E. J. Bellocq took dozens of portraits inside the brothels of Storyville - the only legalized red-light district in North America, until it was shut down in 1917.
Vintage photos “John Bellocq (1873 – 1949) was an American professional photographer who worked in New Orleans during the early 20th century. Bellocq is remembered for his haunting photographs of the prostitutes of Storyville, New Orleans’ legalized red light district.” - Wikipedia

Blue cowboy boots + Butterfly wings: Is the child soldier fresh to death or dressed to kill?
Child Soldier -"i may be wearing blue cowboy boots and fairy wings, but I'll still put a cap in your ass"
Child soldier. What struck me about this picture is that no matter what the world may force us to do, we still have our imagination. Our soul can still live even in the midst of horror.
Why am I so ambivalent about this photo? The wings, the boots seem imposed and don't fit the dichotomy between a child soldier and people attempting to go about their business in the background: "Africa....a child wearing wings toting a shotgun....innocence lost..".

La Belle Epoque, Paris early 1900's French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in French and Belgian history that is conventionally dated as starting in 1871 and ending when World War I began in 1914. I do not know the author of this photo, but I chose it because I think through this picture I know women, men fashion like in the 1900s!

Nine years ago, Japanese photographer Miyoko Ihara began snapping pictures of her grandmother and her odd-eyed white cat. Misao found the abandoned cat in a shed on her land and the pair have barely been apart since. Misao named the white cat Fukumaru (fuku = good fortune; maru = circle). Fukumaru is always in Misao’s shadow whether she is farming her land, having a bath, eating or sleeping. Now their friendship has been documented in a photo book called Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat.
This Grandma And Her Cat Are The Cutest Best Friends Ever. Eighty-eight-year-old Misa found her odd-eyed kitty, Fukumaru, abandoned in a shed. Now the two are basically inseparable. Their beautiful friendship is documented in a photo book, Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat.
Miyoko Ihara began taking a series of photographs of her grandmother Misa twelve years ago,to document the older woman’s daily life. One day Misa found a white kitten in a shed. Like some white cats, this one had two differently colored eyes.Woman and cat became close companions, and their relationship is celebrated in the book Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat.She named the cat ‘Fukumaru” in hope that “God of fuku (good fortune) comes and everything will be smoothed over like maru(circle)

Young civil rights protestor wears a sign reading "I AM A MAN" to try and remind people that Black people are human too and should not be treated inhumanely or be denied the things that are offered to Whites.
"I AM A MAN" - American civil rights protest, 1960s. This man has to let people know that he is a man, that is he is a human. This is because it is not assumed that he is and is often treated less-than because he is a BLACK man.
