Pumpkins and black tacks - I made one of these for Halloween 2011. I purchased two small'ish pumpkins. They were probably about 8" or 9" in diameter. I could not find these same fancy black tacks and I think next time I will try and find them online ahead of time; but, I did find some just OK black tacks at JoAnn Fabrics that I used. I purchased two packages of the tacks, which was 200 total. I thought I would have enough for both pumpkins but as it turned out it was just enough to complete one pumpkin. When I started I was doing the design free hand and it looked alright but I wanted a more straight line leading into the curl so after the first design I decided to use pencil and draw the curls first. That worked out a bit better. I found after the first or second tack that a small hammer was necessary for getting them in all the way if I didn't want my fingers to be all sore by the time I finished. By the time I was done designing, pushing tacks in a bit, hammering them down, rotating, pushing more tacks, hammering more down... it took about an hour and 15 minutes to complete a whole pumpkin but man did it look snazzy!! I was worried that I had spent the money and done all that work and within two weeks the pumpkin would have to be thrown out because it would start rotting. I did it the first week of October so I figured no way would it make it to Halloween. To my extreme surprise it is now one week until Thanksgiving and that pumpkin is still holding up like I never touched it. It just a few days ago started showing signs of decay at the seam of the tacks (where it looks like it has a faint scar underneath the tack line) but the stump, bottom, and flesh shows no sign of mold or decay and it's not soft anywhere on the surface. It's really no different than the other pumpkin that I didn't have enough tacks for, that has been sitting on my window sill this whole time. VERY impressive. I will be tossing the pumpkin the day after Thanksgiving but I LOVE the look and longevity of this craft and will for sure be doing it again next year. I am thinking however, that next year I will use one of the fake, carve-able pumpkins, with the more decorative tacks as shown in the photo, so that I can pack it up after the holiday and pull it out again the following year. This gets a HUGE thumbs up from me. -Angey
