In the early hours of October 16th, 1793, nine months after the execution of her husband, Louis XVI, the 37-year-old former Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, wrote the following tear-stained farewell letter to her sister-in-law, Madame Elisabeth, and her children. Just eight hours later, Marie Antoinette was beheaded. The letter never reached Elisabeth.

This is the last letter of Marie Antoinette, written in the early morning hours of October 16th on the day of her execution. After her trial concluded she was brought back to her cell in the Conciergerie and penned this tear stained letter to her sister in law, Madame Elisabeth. It would never reach its’ intended recipient.

Marie Antoinette's last letter to her children, stained by tears. I saw this letter in person in Paris at the exhibition for Marie Antoinette. I was really moved by her words. She was at the end and her heart was broken. The whole exhibit was an experience I'll never forget.
