A senior writer at "Time" magazine explores what scientists and researchers are discovering about sibling bonds, the longest- lasting relationships we have in our lives. Nobody affects us as deeply as our brothers and sisters-not parents, not children, not friends. From the time we-and they-are born, our siblings are our collaborators and co-conspirators, our role models and cautionary tales.

Thea Stilton and the Dragon's Code These skew a little older than the original Geronimo Stilton books, which both my kids love. Thea is adventurous, and a great heroine, along with her pack of girl cohorts. Juju has read about four in the series so far, and she hasn't gotten tired of them at all. (Read in 2nd grade.)

Black and White by David Macaulay "Black and White won the Caldecott Medal in 1991 and set the stage for other Postmodern Picture Books to follow. Non-linear story lines, surrealistic art, self-referential author’s note, use of peritextual information, multiple perspectives – it’s all in there."

Lulu and the Duck in the Park by Hilary McKay...Margo has found a story that is truly close to her heart. Lulu and the Duck in the Park by Hilary McKay is the book she wants me to share with you today. This is not a picture book, but a chapter book for young kids. It's a story that shines a light onto our furry (and not so furry) friends...
Can't wait to read this book to my son's first grade class. Absolutely fell in love with it. This blog uses it as a mentor text to teach characterization, vocabulary (with educational technology integration), and writing.

Book Review: Sparky! by Jenny Offill & Chris Appelhans
Sparky! by Jenny Offill. Here's how it starts:“I wanted a pet.” The narrator’s mother agrees, “as long as it doesn't need to be walked, bathed or fed.” A hilarious, touching picture book perfect for young animal lovers. Sparky stars a pet who has more to offer than meets the eye. When our narrator orders a sloth through the mail, the creature that arrives isn't good at tricks or hide-and-seek ...or much of anything. Still, there's something about Sparky that is irresistible. Ages 4-8
Sparky! by Jenny Offill and Chris Appelhans - An adorable new picture book about a girl and her sloth. Hardcover $16.99 / ebook $10.99

This loopy mystery kicks off the Chicken Squad series, a spinoff of Cronin and Cornell's J.J. Tully Mysteries that is skewed to even younger readers. Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. This is a chapter book about a wealthy Mexican family that has to move to a farm and start participating in hard labor. There are some sociopolitical issues over class in the book. And it gives you at look at the Great Depression from the perspective of those in Mexico at the time.
Beautifully written children's book about a girl arriving in California from Mexico and she and her mother have to become migrant laborers to survive. Pam Munoz Ryan is wonderful.
