Gerald and Piggie discover the joy of being read. But what will happen when the book ends? I don't enjoy many early reader books, but this one is a joy to read over and over!
5 Early Reader Books That Rock | Parents | Scholastic Piggie realizes that she and Gerald are in a book, and she can make the reader say a funny word out loud, Gerald is tickled pink, but when Gerald comes to understand the danger of the book ending, Piggie comes up with a solution to get the reader to keep reading.
A recent beginning reader book that is hilarious when read aloud. He is this generation's Dr. Seuss (but I like him better). There is a whole series of Elephant and Piggie, but this is my favorite.

TOP TEN READ-ALOUD BOOKS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS By Aimee Owens - Nerdy Book Club
There are wonderful picture books, middle grade novels and young adult books available to readers. I never have trouble with recommendations for children or adults looking for books within those categories. However, I discovered that finding books for early readers (K-2) could be a challenge. Aside from the fact that I think it is harder…
Tired of Dora and Thomas? Try These 15 Fantastic Children’s Book Characters Instead!
Stars: 5 out of 5 Pros: All ages will laugh at this very funny book Cons: No real plot, young kids might not quite get it The Bottom Line: Get ready to laugh With this self-aware entry In a fun series Gerald and Piggie Become Aware of Us Since I've discovered Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie books, anytime I run across a new to me one, I have to stop and read it. I first stumbled on We Are in a Book! about the time it was first published at a book festival. Yes, I stopped and stood there in the tent to read it, and I laughed the entire way through. These books center around an elephant named Gerald and his best friend Piggie. They are opposites, but they work well together. The stories are simple with just dialog between the characters to tell it. But there's still usually a good story and a simple moral to take away with the laughs that are sure to come as you read. This book is a bit of a departure from what I just described because it really doesn't have a story or moral. It's purely for fun, but fun it is in spades. Gerald makes a sudden revelation - there are people watching him and his friend Piggie. But Piggie is aware and not at all upset by the fact that they are being read. Piggie even realizes that she can make us say anything she wants, like "Bananas." But what will happen when the book ends? Really, the book is just the two characters talking back and forth as they first realize they are in a book and then discuss what they can make us do. The only real drama comes when Gerald learns the book will end. But even that is funny because of his over the top reaction. These books are classified as early readers, and I would say the most complicated word here is bananas. Kids with a basic understanding of reading will certainly have no trouble with it. And they'll even learn about reading with emotion as they go through the book. Despite the fact that the words are just dialog between the two, the pictures and font size (which changes drastically at times) convey the emotions with ease. In fact, they greatly add to the fun. The book just begs to be read aloud with enthusiasm. The laughs will go from giggles to full on laughter when you do. Some of the humor might go over the very young, but once a child hits 3 or so, I think they'll get the jokes that come from the premise. As always, the illustrations are simple with just the two characters. But the expressions and poses are genius and truly add to the fun of the book. While not typical for this series, this is an entry not to be missed. You and your child will laugh hard at We Are in a Book!

The Boy Who Loved Words- a book for word choice
Happy 4th of July, Peeps! I hope you are enjoying your holiday! Welcome back for Throwback Thursday. I'm stepping back into time to an old post on Vocabulary. Actually, I'm linking two older posts. The first post is from March of 2011 where I shared activities used with The Boy Who Loved Vocabulary by Roni Schotter. This was a school wide book of the month. For my kindergarten peeps, the vocabulary will be a bit hard. I was teaching 2nd grade during the time. --------------------------------------------------- Throwback Post: My second article, An Inch Deep and Mile Wide Just Won't Do, was published with Really Good Stuff. This article explains the importance of vocabulary instruction. Click the image to link to the article. This month, I'm working on Vocabulary with the book: A Boy Who Loved Words. Although a bit challenging, the story was a fantastic read. I love watching the kids use STRONG descriptive words in their writing. A kindergartener told me they were voracious as he walked in line to the lunch room. ADORABLE!!! Each of the kids in our school were given a word book to jot down and develop their favorite vocabulary words. I created vocabulary cards using words from the The Boy Who Loved Words. As I introduced each word during the read aloud, the kids searched through their bags to find the word and glue them into their word books. It took nearly three days to complete the story. After a week break, we revisited the the book of the month today. I read through, stopping at each of the vocabulary words. The kids called out the correct word as I paused. I was so proud of their ability to read the vocabulary words in isolation. I now know they understand the meaning in the text. I asked for the meaning or a synonym for each of the vocabulary words. Without hesitation, the kids were able to answer. My heart is aflutter with excitement! After our lesson, I had the kids determine and create a list of what they loved the most. Then my kiddos looked up the definition in the dictionary and leaned how to use the thesaurus. We described what we loved with great vocabulary. I've included the vocabulary picture cards and link a few great lesson ideas #1 #2 #3 for The Boy Who Loved Words by Roni Schotter. The Boy Who Loved Words Vocabulary --------------------------------------------------- The second of two post contains my vocabulary journal. We used this journal whole group to break down the meaning of the word. You will find additional journals as well. ENJOY! You can find my original post from February 2011. I love anything involving royalty and history. (Sophia Coppola got most of the material for her Marie Antoinette script from this book.) Considering most people know her as the queen who said "Let them eat cake" I like how it paints a sympathetic portrait. (And she never said that.)

Today's vintage children's book comes recommended by someone very important to me, my grandson. Grayson, who is six, is with me a couple days a week this summer. Yesterday we decided to do a book review together. Grayson liked The Dragon Who Liked to Spit Fire and also liked anticipating what was going to happen as we read it. The illustrations by Judy Varga are fun and charming, the purple and orange color scheme is funky. It's interesting, when I asked Grayson what his favorite illustration was in the book, he picked a black/white one - sophisticated choice! The Dragon Who Liked to Spit Fire Story and Pictures by Judy Varga William Morrow and Company, 1961 This is the illustration that Grayson liked, there's a lot of action going on here. Here's Grayson, giving this book a thumbs up! I will be back posting next week, taking a little time off for fun and work. We're moving one of my daughter's this week, looks like we get to do it in 90 degree weather. Happy Fourth of July!
