Account of doctor who treated Abraham Lincoln after he was shot found

An account of the first doctor to reach Abraham Lincoln after he was shot at Ford's Theater, has been discovered in the US National Archives.

The top hat the Abraham Lincoln was wearing in Ford's Theatre, the night he was assassinated on April 14, 1865. The hat has a black silk mourning band which was added in remembrance of Lincoln's son Willie. This hat was transferred from the War Department to the Patent Office, with permission from Mary Lincoln, in 1867. The Patent Office then transferred the hat to the Smithsonian Institution which immediately placed the hat in a basement storage room. The American public didn't see…
