Lest it be thought that American publishers had a monopoly on prurience, a 1950 German edition by Burgers Taschenbucher has what at first glance seems a pulp detective cover, featuring a scantily clad woman and a pair of voyeuristic eyes. However, a closer look reveals an illustration with a stylised economy of line and a limited but striking colour palette by designer Kurt Hilscher.

1984 by George Orwell The classic dystopian novel that gave us Newspeak and Big Brother. “I think a lot of people pretend to have read Orwell’s 1984 and haven’t. It’s such a prevalent cultural meme, that I think that everyone assumes they know what someone is talking about when they refer to it,” says Christopher Moore, author of Lamb, Fluke and The Stupidest Angel. But he adds, “In a culture where we make assumptions about the freedom of information, and privacy, I think 1984 is more relevan

1984 by George Orwell. When you hear the term, "Big Brother," this is where it came from. It is worth learning the full scope of that nickname.
1984 by George Orwell. I read it when I was in 8th grade I believe, and I was so disappointed that it wasn't a requirement in high school. Such a chilling novel, especially when you consider that some of Orwell's visions can be applied to today's world.
1984 by George Orwell Imagery: One Eye symbolism. It is a dystopian and satirical novel set in Oceania, where society is tyrannized by The Party and its totalitarian ideology. We're seeing the beginning stages of this in today's society.
1984, a classic by George Orwell. What did you think of this classic? #ThriftBooksSchoolClassics Big Brother is watching you!
Although the phrases “1984″ and “Big Brother” are now part of the common culture when I read this novel, it was no more than science fiction. Not my fav genre. It was thick with concepts that had no context in my small world. No internet to connect the dots. Post 9/11 and the horrors of the PATRIOT ACT made me revisit this book. The detailed novel shows how a government can manipulate the people by manipulating the truth and manipulating the news. And then, I had my AH-HA!!

The Book Thief is the story of Liesel Meminger. Liesel is almost ten when she ends up in Molching with Hans and Rosa Hubermann, her new foster parents. It is 1939. In Nazi Germany. Through their eyes we see Hitler and Nazi Germany; we experience the atrocities and the small kindnesses. Zusak’s story is mostly about everyday things: hunger, pettiness, laughter, hope, cruelty and kindness. Loved it.

Set during WWII in Germany about a little girl named Liesel. Clever and beautifully written. This is a book worth reading.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This is a story about a girl in WWII Germany who steals books before they can be burned and shares them with her neighbors and a Jewish man who is hidden in her basement. The story is narrated by Death and is appropriately dark, but manages to be uplifting at the same time. So far, my favorite book read in our book club....
The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak (Book Club Kit). It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery.
Steppenwolf for Young Adults presents its stage adaptation of "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. Chicago, IL. October 16, 2012 to November 11, 2012.
The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak - This story, narrated by death, tells of a girl living outside of Munich, in Nazi Germany, named Liesel Meminger. Liesel likes to steal books from Nazi book burnings, the mayor's library, or anywhere that they can be found. After learning to read, she shares her stolen stories with neighbours during bomb raids, as well as the Jewish man living in her basement.

"Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious." - George Orwell, 1984, Book 1, Chapter 7
The original "Big Brother" book. An excellent evaluation of the inherent problems with totalitarian and/or socialistic government, as well as an emphasis on the impact of history on every day life.
1984 by George Orwell. This book is sooooo creepy it made me stay up at night. It's about a world were everyone is being watched by a person called Big Brother (where the tv show comes from) and there have to obey him and love him and not love anyone else.....if that gives you a clue about what happens.... It has a very creepy concept about what a human can go through before they become brain washed...

George Orwell: Animal Farm Animal Farm is the most famous by far of all twentieth-century political allegories. Its account of a group of barnyard animals who revolt against their vicious human master, only to submit to a tyranny erected by their own kind, can fairly be said to have become a universal drama.
You will probably read this in school. It is more interesting when you know what it is really about. Not for middle schoolers, too advanced conceptually. Animal Farm

1984 by George Orwell... I read this over the summer back in high school. It was extremely unnevering to say the least.
Big brother is watching -- OK, I'm cheating here because in High School I, like everyone else, was supposed to read this - I did not. I read it in --- 1984!
Classic book about becoming automatons of the state and desperately trying to maintain personal freedom.

1984 by George Orwell. Brilliant, effective, and decidedly haunting. A book that makes the term Big Brother just as frightening as it sounds.

1984 - George Orwell I avoided school assigned books like the plague until this one...my sophomore year of high school. 1984 was a great experience that will always give me nightmares of rat helmets and big brother!
1984 by George Orwell. Still a classic... though I'm partial to dystopia YA tales. I had to pin this one, Big Brother was watching me!
'1984' by George Orwell = Speaking of haunting, allow me to present the book that can turn you into a fetal curl of paranoia. Of all the books on this list, 1984 is probably the easiest to read and the most widely referenced. Ever hear of Big Brother, the Thought Police, or Thoughtcrime? All from this novel. Read it, and just try to remain calm.
my favorite book!! "Thought Police." "Big Brother." "Orwellian." These words have entered our vocabulary because of George Orwell's classic dystopian novel, 1984. The story of one man's nightmare odyssey as he pursues a forbidden love affair through a world ruled by warring states and a power structure that controls not only information but also individual thought and memory, 1984 is a prophetic, haunting tale. Big brother is watching you!
1984 by George Orwell. Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy.

There was even a book dedicated to the year in which it projected an insightful use of media (music, news, television, film) to further the project of tyranny and control. George Orwell, 1984 (book cover by Olle Eksell, 1959).
George Orwell, 1984 (book cover by Olle Eksell, 1959). This book really stuck with me. Out of everybook I read in highschool, something about this book stuck. It was realistic and traumatic. A look into how the world would be possibly in a few decades. I have a bittersweet/love-hate relationship with this book!
George Orwell, 1984 (book cover by Olle Eksell, 1959). Read it when I was in Grade Six and still traumatized to this day. Prescient and insightful about the use of media (music, news, television, film) to further the project of tyranny and control.
