"In fairy tales witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs. That is why they are so hard to catch." Witches, as our hero learns, hate children. With the help of a friend and his somewhat-magical grandmother, our hero tries to expose the witches before they dispose of him.

Matilda by Roald Dahl. Read this to my 6 year old, very mature, girl. She was on the edge of her seat, and I wondered at times if it was too much. It wasn't, I guess, but you have to know your kid.

When my teacher sent me to get this book from the library I thought that BFG meant "Big Fat Gorilla" not "Big Friendly Giant"

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator by Roald Dahl

Someone's been stealing from the three meanest farmers around, and they know the identity of the thief—it's Fantastic Mr. Fox! Working alone they could never catch him; but now fat Boggis, squat Bunce, and skinny Bean have joined forces, and they have Mr. Fox and his family surrounded. What they don't know is that they're not dealing with just any fox—Mr. Fox would rather die than surrender. Only the most fantastic plan can save him now.

i love all things roald dahl

I love all of the Roald Dahl books, and they always make a great read aloud. Matilda is a hit every year with my students.
