In reality saloons of the old West often had a barber chair in the corner, so that a religious man could use the excuse for being there. The movies show a gold coin laid on the bar, but actually they were paid in gold dust (!) Unscrupulous bartenders stole from the owners by rubbing grease linament into their hair. After taking the "payment", they would slyly rub their head, thus hiding gold dust into it. Washing their hair later yielded gold dust, from which they supplemented their income.
