Skateboarding in the 1960s

This black and white photo series, shot by Bill Eppridge for LIFE magazine five decades ago, illustrates the way in which skateboarding was enjoyed in a more laid-back and less frowned-upon manner in 1960s Manhattan.

The picture came with this caption: "aunt regina and uncle chuck pose for the camera in a comical manner, but all is not well. uncle chuck has lost his job at the grocery store, and they are sharing a sweater on a bitter january day because niether can afford a winter coat. it's just tragic. what courage they have!" My thought is that you can always find a job, but love like I see in this photo comes once a lifetime! It just makes me so happy! KZ
