Beginning in the late 19th century, Asian decorative arts, had a tremendous impact on Western culture. Through the addition of princess seams, lace undersleeves and inserts of pale-blue taffeta at front and back, the furisode kimono became a stylish Western dressing gown, complete with bustle. Regardless of these Western elements, the dressing gown is strongly evocative of Japan, particularly in its retention of the crimson lining often found in women's kimonos.

This 1885 kimono dressing gown is a particularly creative example of how a Japanese garment could be transformed into fashionable Western dress. Beginning in the late 19th century, Asian decorative arts had a tremendous impact on Western culture. Many Americans and Europeans traveled to Japan, often returning with textiles and garments that were soon converted to familiar Western garments.

femme-de-lettres: Large (Wikimedia) Knut Ekwall’s The Proposal is a pretty thing, certainly. What I’m interested in it for, though, is the lovely example it provides of Victorian material culture (it was painted in the 1880s). The heavy, ambiguously Middle Eastern portière, pulled back with a cord weighed down with a massive tassel, the richly patterned ingrain carpet, the dark wood, the bold red walls—it’s all the very picture of the middle-class Victorian home. The furniture is the quintessential blend of styles: the easel and the chair behind it, with their brass tacks and fairly linear forms, are plainly Renaissance Revival; the much more ornate chair (from which the subject has just risen, leaving her needlework behind, to eavesdrop on the proposal), and the little side table beside it, are Rococo revival. The little what-not in the back right corner is covered in little objects, figures and fans and so on, to demonstrate the worldliness of the household—mirrored by the oil landscapes, color lithographs, and souvenir plates hanging salon-style on the walls behind, with feathers and plants tucked in and around them. Even the top of the door hasn’t been ignored, itself holding up three little plaster sculptures.
The Proposal by Ekwall Knut (1843 -1912)
olden days - Courtship-Ekwall Knut. A young man declares his intentions, while a young woman anxiously awaits her parents' verdict. The room is a real advertisement for Victorian decorating excesses. "less is more" is not a concept that the Victorians understood.

In the Christian church we have the christ child who sits on the lap of his mother the virgin mary, and there are many of us who maintain that the christ child on the left of the virgin Mary is the very visual appropriation by the Christians of this very venerable icon of ancient egypt The pronounced resemblance may reflect a political challenge that faced the early Christian church to wean potential converts from their reverence from Isis. IIP. Barbara S.Lesko, Isis was really the supreme savior goddesses as the ancient Mediterranean world and had her call as far as Europe and England, and probably early Christianity found Isis to be one of the most difficult obstacle to the popularity of Christianity because people were devoted to this loving mother goddess. -- Lonnie Plaxico

Breastfeeding & Christ- uninviting “modesty” to the breastfeeding discussion Is feeding a baby really a conversation that modesty needs to be invited to? How is a woman feeding her baby immodest? If someone struggles to control their thoughts & actions, should their struggle supersede that of a small child’s need for food & comfort & should the burden of that individual be the responsibility of that child & mother? Could we be using “modesty” as a way to objectify women in general.
A lot of times people who view breast feeding as negative or disgusting, don't even know about how far back it goes. Here is a picture with a caption that I would say to those kind of people. It's important that people realize that even way back in the day, pretty much all women breastfed. There was no such thing as formula and women weren't told to "cover up."

Madonna Litta (Madonna and the Child) - Leonardo Da Vinci (Italian, 1452- 1519)
Madonna and Child (Madonna Litta) by Leonardo da Vinci. It was probably painted in Milan, where the artist moved in 1482. The Madonna's sublime, tender gaze as she looks at her son, and the tranquillity of the distant mountainous landscape, reflect humanist dreams of Ideal Man and a Harmonious Life. At once profound and noble, the painting reveals great beauty in its colouring and composition. The painting came to the Hermitage Museum in 1865 from the collection of Count Antonio Litta in Milan

Around 1880, Dr JM Grancille patented the first mechanical vibrator and in 1902 Hamilton Beach, an American company patented the first electric vibrator for retail sale, making the vibrator the fifth domestic appliance to be electrified after the sewing machine, fan, kettle and toaster and a decade before the vacuum and iron, somewhat unbelievably.
hysterical paroxysm - Google Search
Yes it is true, when women started showing a variety of symptoms for "hysteria" (including faintness, nervousness, fluid retention, heaviness in abdomen, irritability, loss of appetite for food or sex and a tendency to cause trouble) the doctor would prescribe a "pelvic massage". According to Wikipedia "Galen, a prominent physician from the 2nd century, wrote that hysteria was a disease caused by sexual deprivation in particularly passionate women: hysteria was noted quite often in virgins, nuns, widows and, occasionally, married women. The prescription in medieval and renaissance medicine was intercourse if married, marriage if single, or vaginal massage (pelvic massage) by a midwife as a last recourse."
