Seen in sunlight, the male in breeding plumage is a brilliant scarlet with black wings and tail. The female has an olive-green back, brown wings, and yellow breast and belly; both birds are 7 1/2 inches long. Between July and August, the male scarlet tanager adopts a winter plumage that is similar to the female— dull green above and yellowish below—but he retains his black wings and tail.
Scarlet Macaw. the one large macaw that has no feathers on its "leather," the white area around the eyes. And there is NO redder than the scarlet. Would love to have one, as they are gentle, playful, very trainable, and wonderful companion birds.
