In her seminal work "Tree Mountain - A Living Time Capsule" (1983), earth art pioneer Agnes Denes ( Budapest, 1931) takes art out of the "machinery of the art world" and plants it in nature. This enormous earthwork consists of a constructed gravel mountain and the planting of 11,000 Finnish Pine trees by volunteers into a complex pattern. Each volunteer received inheritable certificates of stewardship over one tree, valid for 400 years.

Agnes Denes. Wheatfield - A Confrontation. Land art installation on Battery Park Landfill, NY. 1982. "To attempt to plant, sustain, and harvest two acres of wheat here, wasting valuable precious real estate, obstructing the machinery by going against the system, was an effrontery that made it the powerful paradox I had sought for."

Agnes Denes's Wheatfields - Agnes Denes is a giant among land artists. Her most well-known project is probably the 1982 piece "Wheatfield -- A Confrontation," in which she planted a field of golden wheat on two acres of a landfill near Wall Street and the World Trade Center in Manhattan. She weeded, irrigated and cultivated the mini oasis, bringing the essence of rural America into the throngs of America's urban epicenter. The confrontation was between nature and artifice.
‘Wheatfield’(1982) was a temporary installation located in Battery Park, on the Hudson River at the southern tip of Manhattan, New York. The field was planted on top of a landfill and urban waste and scrap site, a lot of which was rubble excavated from the construction of the World Trade Center. Agnes Denes carefully hand sowed each seed, moving waste and rubble aside, so that each plant had a proper planting. 8000 square meters of landfill were covered in topsoil and planted with wheat.
