Writing Pin 2: Scene of the Crime Writing: Set up a fake crime scene. Then have all the children to gather around and examine the scene of the crime. After they have all looked at the crime scene have them return to their desk and tell them to write a story about what they thought happened. This will make some interesting stories, but I would use this in only 4th or 5th grade.

Love this idea not just for school/writing assignments: Scene of the Crime Writing: Set up a fake crime scene. Then have all the children to gather around and examine the scene of the crime. After they have all looked at the crime scene have them return to their desk and tell them to write a story about what they thought happened. This will make some interesting stories, but I would use this in only 4th or 5th grade.
Student CSI Writing Prompt: Set up a "crime scene" for students, have them observe the details, and write a prompt based on what they see. Linked website is for forensic science, but concepts may also be applied to ELA. Involves analyzing evidence, drawing inferences, creating mystery/suspense, writing informative text, and logically structuring a sequence of events. (Common Core State Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.1, RL.9-10.5, W.9-10.2, W.9-10.3)
Disney Teachers, You KNOW that I LOVE this idea. It aligns perfectly to "Law and Order"...EXTENDED RESPONSE!!!! Set up a 'crime scene'-students draw inferences, writing project, and/or do some related forensic science experiments!!!! Don't let the students forget to "tag" the evidence! This can/should lead to a mock trial, where the evidence is presented! LOVE this idea! ~Pat
Surprise students by setting up a crime scene in the classroom...how great would this be for a creative writing prompt?!?!

I give each of the kids a page with a different idiom on it and then we put all the pages together to make a class book to be checked out of the class library. Or, use notebook paper and allow students to make their own IDIOM book w/ an idiom of the week (day).
This teacher has her students create a class book of idioms. Each of the students makes a page with a different idiom on it. Then students can check it out from the book bin!

Stoplight Paragraphs: this anchor chart gives students the knowledge they need to write a well developed paragraph. Not only does it act as a reminder, but the following activity gives students the opportunity to "cut" up a paragraph into the topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence. This can also be a reading strategy for the junior grades, as more informational text can be better understood by finding the thesis and supporting details, and conclusion. @amandarogers21 @kc2102

The first pictures are of adjective kisses. I give the kids each a candy kiss to eat, and they come up with adjectives to describe it. I had an aid cut out card-stock in the shape of a kiss and cover it with aluminum foil. The kids write the adjectives with sharpies onto the kisses. I use white streamers to add their name to it.
Create these kisses out of tin foil (write the name of each student on each streamer) then give each kid a Hershey Kiss. Have them write a poem.

the "glow and grow" strategy is a perfect tool for my students to use when reflecting and assessing their own, or a peer's work, or for me to use during formal or summative assessments. Basically, students (or teachers) use a "glowing" highlighter (we use bright yellow) to show what was done really well, and a "growing" green highlighter to show areas that could use some improvement.

snowball fight - kids write 3 things about themselves on a sheet of white paper (or maybe how they spent their vacation?), but they don't write their name. throw the "snowballs" for a few minutes, then pick up the ball closest to you. try and figure out who wrote what!! what a fun first day back from winter break activity!

!.!.!. Great idea!! Back to school Snowball Fight...kids write 3 things about themselves on a sheet of white paper. They do not write their names on the paper. Wad it up and on your command, have a "snowball" (or baseball) fight. At the end of 1 minute, each student grabs the nearest snowball and tries to guess who wrote it. I do this with some of my small groups, and also as a feelings activity for my older classes. Add a song?!

Character Bags - Great character education idea! ~ Could use with historical figures or story characters
These character bags can be used for multiple different subjects. For example, in social studies, every different bag could be a historical figure with facts typed up or written up in the bag. Also, another subject could be reading and each character bag could be a different author. Besides subjects, these bags can be used for students to introduce interesting facts about themselves. ----Samantha Drozd
