Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is located in Northwestern Lower Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan. The visitor center is in Empire, MI about 25 miles from Traverse City. Most people visit the park via car, but you can fly to Traverse City and rent a car to drive to the park.

Pure Michigan is the travel and tourism site for Michigan and has great resources to plan a visit and learn about the area. We loved Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Island, and the Upper Peninsula area on Lake Superior. GMA voted Sleeping Bear Dunes the most beautiful place in America in August and we totally agree. It's a long trip from certain parts of the US- but plan a trip just like you would to the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone- it's just beautiful with lots to do and see!
