Russian Orthodox Church, Jerusalem. In the crypt here is found the uncorrupted body of G.D. Elizabeta (Ella), wife of Grand Duke Serge Romanov and sister of Tsarina Alexandra. Ella and Alix were granddaughters of Queen Victoria of England. After she was widowed, Ella became an Orthodox nun and nurse. She was subsequently canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Peter and Paul Fortress; established by Peter the Great on May 16, 1703 on small Hare Island by the north bank of the Neva River, the last upstream island of the Neva delta. Built at the height of the Northern War in order to protect the projected capital from a feared Swedish counterattack, the fort never fulfilled its martial purpose - rebuilt in stone from 1706-1740.
Singer building - St Petersburg, Russia. Built in the late 19th Century by the American Singer Sewing Machine Company, this building was put to official use by the Soviet Government after the Revolution. Fortunately the building has survived almost totally intact as it is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau commercial architecture.
