This seems like it'd even be a good rule of thumb for mixing patterns with clothing. Good to remember for choosing pillows, curtains, rugs. Pattern mixing= geometric (row 1)+organic (row 2) +small scale (row 3). All patterns should have some color cohesion, or fit loosely into your color scheme.

"The color I find most beautiful and chic is gray... if it's simplicity you crave, there's a divine gray that almost always works: Benjamin Moore's Horizon. If a friend calls me and says, 'Help! What do I do?' I reply, 'Paint the walls Horizon and the trim white.' Think of a gray suit with a white shirt. It's a nice clean story, and you can go in a hundred different directions with the tie." —STEVEN GAMBREL

"Velvet is very rich, so just by tossing a couple pillows onto the the seating, the space immediately feels glamorous," she says. "I also mixed metals (both shiny and matte) throughout to reflect light. Additional lighting adds depth by creating shadows when the sun goes down and the lights are turned on.
