Sibiu is a city in Transylvania, Romania, with a population of 155,000. Sibiu is one of the most important cultural centres of Romania and, in tandem with Luxembourg, it was designated a European Capital of Culture for the year 2007. Formerly the centre of the Transylvanian Saxons, the old city of Sibiu was ranked as "Europe's 8th most idyllic place to live" by Forbes.
The Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary, Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania. Its massive 73.34 m high steeple is a landmark of the city. The Cathedral was built in the 14th century on the location of another 12th-century church. In 1671 a Slovakian craftsman built an organ to replace the previous one that was built in 1585. Today the newer organ is the largest in the southeastern region of Europe.
