Humphrey Bogart was a famous Film Noir actor who starred in films such as 'The Maltese Falcon' (1941) and 'The Big Sleep' (1946). His characters represent the typical film noir anti-hero protagonist. He is seen here in a typical 1940s context; wearing a trilby hat, trench-coat and smoking.
A exploratory commentary on Hollywood's legendary actor Humphrey Bogart and his unique down-to-earth personality.
Made infamous by Humphrey Bogart in cult films like ‘The Big Sleep’, and ‘The Maltese Falcon’, the iconic leading men of Film Noir were known as being brooding, hard-drinking womanizers with a quick wit dispensed more often by the barrel of a gun than by minced words. So when it comes to emulating these hero’s …
The most popular hat of the time was the Fedora, easily followed by the trench coat. The Homburg hat started to replace the top hat in informal wear, and the top hat was reserved for formals.

Humphrey Bogart ... cool is NOT something that you can acquire, it's something you are born with. It's an attitude of being, anything else is a cheap imitation. I can't help it; this man just gets me.

Hurrell’s photography defined the Golden Age of Hollywood and the special brings hundreds of his most famous photographs alive. Bette Davis, Fred Astaire, Jean Harlow, Clark Gable, Mae West, Gary Cooper, Betty Grable, James Cagney, Tyrone Power, Dorothy Lamour, the Barrymores, and Marlene Dietrich are among the stars Hurrell photographed in Hollywood’s Golden era. In later years his glamorous portrait subjects include Robert Redford, Raquel Welch, Sharon Stone, Michelle Pfeiffer, Paul Newman, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, and John Travolta. Legends in Light captures the mystique of classic Hollywood through the work of the man who helped create some of the screen’s greatest stars.Katherine Hepburn, Sharon Stone, Natalie Cole, Loretta Young, Raquel Welch, Sherilyn Fenn, Brooke Shields and others are just a few of the stars of both the past and present who reminisce and pay tribute to Hurrell. Legends in Light also includes historical perspective on Hollywood, which the producers searched through Hollywood archives for rare newsreel footage of life in the film capital during Hurrell’s heyday. For 64 years, George Hurrell created images that made millions of Americans flock to movie theaters. As head of still photography for such studios as MGM, Warner Brothers, and Columbia, he created immortal images of almost all the screen’s great stars, and played a major role in shaping the careers of Rita Hayworth, Jane Russell, Norma Shearer, and Ann Sheridan. His use of dramatic poses, sharp focus, high-contrast lighting and masterful printing techniques created a new look for Hollywood portraiture, inspiring the label “glamour photography.” In later years, Hurrell created memorable portraits of Newman and Redford for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Warren Beatty and Annette Benning to publicize the film Bugsy, and Natalie Cole for the cover of the album “Unforgettable.”

Young Humphrey Bogart
"The real reason there will never be another Bogart lies embedded in Kanfer’s account of his career as it was shaped by the anxieties of a nation mired in the Great Depression, sending its sons and husbands off to a far-flung war. Bogart became the model of the man circumstances demanded, a reluctant everyday hero who finally rises to the occasion when pushed too far. The age-old debate about nature versus nurture overlooks the role of culture, and Bogart, both on and off the screen, is testimony to the fact that we become who we are in response to the times in which we live, that the times favor some traits, some people — and some actors — over others. Bogart’s appeal was and remains completely adult — so adult that it’s hard to believe he was ever young. If men who take responsibility are hard to come by in films these days, it’s because they’re hard to come by, period, in an era when being a kid for life is the ultimate achievement, and “adult” as it pertains to film is just a euphemism for pornography. Bob Dylan (1941 - by Richard Avedon) is an American musician, poet and artist whose position in popular culture is unique. Dylan started his musical odyssey in 1959 and much of his best known work is from the 1960s, when he became an informal documentarian and reluctant figurehead of American unrest.

Bob Dylan, musician, New York, 1965, edition, Richard Avedon. This photo seems to be about the life of a celebrity when they're not being a celebrity. Bob Dylan isn't surrounded by a crowd of people wanting his autograph, he isn't wearing anything special, and he isn't doing anything out of the ordinary. Instead, he looks like any other man that could be walking on the street. To me, this photo normalizes the life of a celebrity, making it easier for a viewer to feel connected to the celebrity.

"A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion". - Richard Avedon self portrait 1963 from Christian Hindemith
“A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.” -Richard Avedon [Credit - Richard Avedon Self-portrait, New York City, 1963]
Richard Avedon self portrait. Richard Avedon (5/15/1923-10/1/2004) was an American fashion & portrait photographer. Avedon did not conform to the standard technique of taking studio fashion photographs where models stood emotionless & seemingly indifferent to the camera. He showed models full of emotion, smiling, laughing, & in action in outdoor settings. Avedon died in San Antonio, Texas, of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was on an assignment for The New Yorker.
Richard Avedon (1923 – 2004) was an American photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century." Avedon was always interested in how portraiture captures the personality and soul of its subject. As his reputation as a photographer became widely known, he brought in many famous faces to his studio and photographed them with a large-format 8x10 view camera.
