Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) known as the "First Lady of Song" and "Lady Ella," Following a troubled childhood, Ella Fitzgerald turned to singing and debuted at the ApolloTheater in 1934. Discovered in an amateur contest, she became the top female jazz singer for more than 50 years. In 1958, Fitzgerald made history as the first African-American woman to win a Grammy Award she would go on to win 13 Grammys and sell more 40 million albums.
