Villa Borghese is a large public park in modern Rome. Built in 1605 to be a private park of the Borghese family it became a government property in 1901 and was open to the public. The park houses several museums, a zoo, an artificial lake, a riding school, an amphitheater, and numerous fountains and statues including those of Byron, Victor Hugo and Goethe.
