Happy Modern Quilts: An Evolved Rainbow Quilt. Perfect baby quilt. Stash buster
Happy Modern Quilts: An Evolved Rainbow Quilt. I like the double line.
Happy Modern Quilts: An Evolved Rainbow Quilt
One day I decided to make a rainbow quilt. I cut 3" x width of fabric strips from 16 different fabric and sewed them together to make one big hunk of rainbow. My original plan was to that. Just quilt and bind and there you have a rainbow quilt. But somehow once it was put together, it was just to much. So I decided to cut it into strips and make something less brilliant. Somewhere along the way, I decided to make a 'set' of baby quilts. Here's the first one. You can read about it here. I really think this one is my (almost) favorite. I just love white with the bright colors. I decided each subsequent quilt should use a different background fabric, and also different technique. So this coin quilt was pretty basic, I knew when I started exactly how it the layout would be, and I used white for the background. OK. Now on to the next one. This is the baby that sat around waiting to be quilted for a couple months and held up the show. But it's the second one I pieced. I decided this one would definitely be a girl quilt. So I went with chocolate brown, knowing that I'd pull out the pinks as my accent. This one is pretty basic as well. But the difference from the first one is that I just started without a real plan. Just a big brown square...then started sewing rainbow strips around it. I decided those big brown pieces need some help so I hand quilted in rainbow colors. My hand quilting skills are not so great. Sturdy, but not so perfectly even... but the only way to learn is to practice. This Little Folks flannel makes a super soft back. I forgot to mention that I first machine-quilted in the ditch around the strips, then I was able to do the hand quilting without any hoop or frame because it was well secured. This was my third quilt, and I decided to use Kona Ash as my background. I also went with a total improv style of piecing. I started out making the plus sign in the top right hand corner, then without meaning to, it turned into a math themed quilt! I'm not sure if any baby would have sweet dreams sleeping under math symbols...Oh well, it was a lot of fun to put together! I love the combination of the greyish tan background, the rainbow hued binding, and the yellowy-lime polkadot binding. These quilts were a lot of fun to put together. I had hoped to get a picture of all three together, but the coin quilt went to a new home before the others were finished.
It started out with an idea to make a rainbow quilt. I sewed 3" x WOF (width of fabric) strips together . I didn't take a picture, but here's the little bit of leftover. (After I had changed my mind and cut it all up into more strips, but more on that later) I had envisioned a big happy stripey rainbow, with a small black applique down in one corner. But once I had all the strips sewn together, it was just too....much! Somewhere along the way I had the idea to make a few quilts out of this big rainbow chunk. A mini 'series' if you will. I thought I'd make one really simple quilt, and one with more complicated piecing, and maybe one with improvisational piecing. Each quilt would use a different colored solid as the background. For the first quilt, I cut three strips 6" wide and used Kona Snow to make a classic coin quilt. I did crosshatch quilting with double lines in one direction - Ashley's signature style. Here's the back using Kona Aqua, another rainbow strip, and Kona Spearmint. Next I pulled out some chocolate brown to make another quilt top with some more strips from this big hunk of rainbow. I'll show you more of this one soon. I'm thinking of backing this one with a snuggly pink flannel. And here's the third one on the design wall right now. I have enough rainbow fabrics left to make another quilt top, but we'll see. I'm hoping to finish these up soon, but first on the list is a dress for my little girl's birthday.

This looks like a very simple modern quilt idea for a baby quilt. I can see using 6 inch squares with color blocks , two 2 inch, two 4 inch, and one 6 inch block of each color in each row.

Ah remember way back when I posted a photo of a quilt I found on Pinterest? I wanted to see how a quilt design could translate into a crocheted blanket. I decided to use one of my favourite yarns to make it with. The beautiful Cotton 8 from Scheepjeswol. Available in the most delicious array of colours it's also available to buy online from Deramores. It's a sport weight pure cotton yarn that doesn't split. A rare find! 170m per 50g so it goes a long way. Recommended hook size is 3mm but I used a 3.5mm hook as I found it gave me a good tension. I chose the following colours for my blanket: Red - 510 (50g) Burnt Orange - 671 (50g) Orange - 716 (50g) Yellow - 714 (50g) Light Green - 642 (50g) Bright Green - 517 (50g) Light Blue - 622 (50g) Dark Blue - 563 (50g) Purple - 661 (50g) White - 502 (450g) Black - 515 (100g) I had plenty of yarn left over. Enough to make a co-ordinating cushion cover! A closed granny square gave me the solid block to replicate the quilt design (a tutorial will follow!) and it was a very quick and easy project to make. Before I knew it I had made all the blocks and it was time to start joining it all together! After blocking of course ;-) Looking good! Next the border! For this I used a new technique for me (again more about that in the tutorial) And finally it was finished! Ah...the finished blanket blowing in the breeze! I'm really pleased and delighted at just how effective the quilt design translated into a crochet project. I foresee more quilt designs in the future! It's a lovely weight and, because it's cotton, easy to wash too! Stupidly, I forgot to measure and weigh the finished blanket :-/ Sorry guys! I've left the blanket in Holland for an Open Day display. Once I have it home again I shall get the details for you all. I have the tutorial almost completed. Just a few photos to add. As usual it will be completely free :-) AND....I may just have a little not so little Cotton 8 kit to give away to one lucky reader!!! Stay tuned...... ;-)
More chevrons! And rainbows!

Ever since Crazy Mom Quilt's Ticker Tape Quilt I've had a quilt idea in my head. A quilt with "ticker taped' raindrops. So appropriate for Seattle.
