"Virna Lisi: Masculinitazion of the American Woman" Esquire Magazine cover by George Lois, March 1965 Issue
Throughout the 60s & early 70s, designer George Lois created some of Esquire Magazine's most memorable covers, like this shot from 1965. "The ad guys hated it," Lois says. "It was too edgy... It was a spoof of the whole idea of a glamorous Hollywood." Marilyn Monroe & Jayne Mansfield declined. Kim Novak's publicist hung up on him. Then he found Italian actress Virna Lisi, in town filming "Assault on a Queen" with Frank Sinatra, who thought the idea was terrific.
