Tthis garden is an inexpensive small space solution for growing herbs and spices. This family was already growing plants in recycled food packaging, so the idea was a hit, in fact it was so sucessful with viewers that Rosenbaum published a how-to tutorial. All you need is emptied and cleaned 2-liter PET bottles, scissors, clothesline rope, twine or wire, and two washers per bottle.

Sow seeds in toilet paper rolls. Awesome upcycle, totally sustainable, and incredibly frugal. Great idea!

Shredded paper, water, blender and a muffin tin. Seed starters dry & ready for some soil!

Sprinkle cinnamon on the soil after seeds are planted or when fungus or mold is detected on the seedling or plant to kill the fungus or mold.

DIY natural planters: eggshells! Seed planting that's natural, biodegradable, can be planted directly in the ground and provides nourishment to the plant and surrounding soil! Genius!

Have you ever heard of seed bombs?  Basically, they are balls made out of clay, compost, and seeds.  They can be tossed anywhere you have a large area you'd like to cover with flowers, etc.  Apparently, seed bombs were first used in the 70's to "bomb"...

I've started seedlings in the bottoms of egg cartons, but this idea is so much better!

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I start my summer garden in December and January, using a neat trick called “Winter-Sowing.” Winter-sowing is an outdoor method of seed germination (invented by Trudi Davidoff) which requires just two things: miniature greenhouses (made from recycled milk jugs) and Mother Nature. You can winter-sow your way to a beautiful garden, too…for pennies. Here’s how:

The best way to water your garden is to set up a drip irrigation system with an automatic timer. But what if you do not have that option?. If so, a great option is to bury a milk jug with holes drilled in it next to your plants. To water all you have to do is stick the hose in the top of the jug and fill up the milk jug and you are done! It also makes it easy to fertilize, add a scoup of fertilizer into the jug and add water and your done!
