From the author of 1491 - the best-selling study of the pre-Columbian Americas - a deeply engaging new history of the most momentous biological event since the death of the dinosaurs.
1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created. A follow up book to 1491, also by Charles Mann. Say what you might about Columbus, but the arrival of Europeans in the western hemisphere, good or bad, was probably the most significant event in modern human history. It was the start of globalization and the Homogenocene.
1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created. The follow-up to Charles Mann's book 1491. A very interesting account of the exchange of food, diseases and people between the old world and new and Asia.
1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created Non Fiction A fascinating look at one of the lesser-known, lesser-considered aspects of what happened when Columbus and his crew set foot on American soil: the environmental upheaval that began as they brought plants, animals and diseases that forever changed the local biosphere, both in America and in Europe once the explorers returned to the Old World.

Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series has become a worldwide phenomenon thanks to the appeal of endearing protagonist Precious Ramotswe and the author’s charmingly quirky prose. In this 13th installment, Mma Ramotswe’s attention is focused on a pesky disciplinary problem at her adopted daughter’s school - while Grace Makutsi adjusts to wedded bliss and the famed Clovis Andersen arrives in Botswana looking for more than bush tea.

Running With Scissors- Augusten Burroughs. Great reading. Augusten is very witty and sarcastic! I love his writing!
Hard to believe this is a true story, so worth reading. Augusten Burroughs is VERY good.
Running with Scissors - Augusten Burroughs Challenged in Hillsborough County, Fla. (2010). One school’s report stated “This book has inappropriate content for a high school media center collection. The book contained homosexual & heterosexual situations, profanity, underage drinking & smoking, extreme moral shortcomings, child molesters, graphic pedophile situations & total lack of negative consequences throughout the book.” (Source: Books Challenged or Banned in 2010-2011 by Robert P. Doyle)
Running with Scissors is the true story of a boy whose mother (a poet with delusions of Anne Sexton) gave him away to be raised by her unorthodox psychiatrist who bore a striking resemblance to Santa Claus. So at the age of twelve, Burroughs found himself amidst Victorian squalor living with the doctor’s bizarre family, and befriending a pedophile who resided in the backyard shed. The story of an outlaw childhood where rules were unheard of, and the Christmas tree stayed up all year rou...

Reading Lolita in Tehran- Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a bold and inspired teacher named Azar Nafisi secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western classics. The Girl in the Photograph, Kate Riordan. In the summer of 1933, Alice has arrived at Fiercombe Manor in disgrace. The beautiful house becomes her sanctuary, a place to hide her shame from society. The manor also becomes a place of suspicion, of secrecy. Something isn't right. Someone is watching. Tragedy haunts the empty rooms & foreboding hangs heavy in the stifling heat. Traces of the previous occupant, Elizabeth Stanton, are everywhere.

Skipping Christmas by John Grisham

This is one of my favorite John Grisham books!! It was also made into a movie called "Christmas with the Kranks"
The book that Christmas with the Kranks was based on. But the book was so much funnier! Finally! A John Grisham book I can read! (not a big fan of courtroom drama books)
Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That's just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they'll skip the holiday altogether. But, as this weary couple discovers, skipping Christmas brings consequences. A classic tale for modern times, Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition.
this is the only John Grisham book I recommend to my friends. Bless him.
