Bubble Gum Cigars (origin uncertain). Their genesis is seemingly lost to history, but generations of new dads have handed these out to pals on the arrival of a new baby girl (pink) or boy (blue).
Smith Brothers Cough Drops (1872) William and Andrew Smith were actually producing their cough drops for years, but in 1872 they began boxing them — with their bearded selves on the label — to prevent sales of knockoffs. Long since overtaken by cough-medicine manufacturers, the brothers' drops are now made by a private-equity company in Santa Monica, Calif.

Pop Beads. loved them. got them out of gumball machines.
Pop Beads. I loved these. Also used to buy beads for beaded curtains, burn the ends with a match and stick it together and I had a necklace in every color!
Pop Beads ~ these bring back memories. Had them when I was a little girl [1950s]. Loved making necklaces and bracelets with them. Didn't even know they were still making them...how wonderful that girls today can have fun with them, too.

When I was in elementary school, we said the pledge of allegiance ~ with sincerity ~ first thing every morning. We studied about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, celebrated their birthdays on the correct dates, and their pictures were often up in the classrooms, especially during the month of February. We also had prayer in school.
Every school morning...The Pledge of Allegiance: I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Oh, @Kaylin Voss. How special these notes of ours from middle school and high school are to me. They are definitely something the kids nowadays won't have 10 years from now.
I hope people never stop writing letters. Make sure you teach your kids that hand written notes are the best!!

Flipping through albums in a record store... on saturdays my mama gave me 2 quarters, lots of money back then. My best friend and I went to the movies and got a bag of popcorn AND drink with one quarter; the record shop was on the other corner. We walked there, listened to a lot of 45 records and bought one with the other quarter. So much fun :)
I was in heaven when I went to the record store!
Flipping through albums in a record store... I cannot express how much I miss these places. Licorice Pizza, Sam Goody, Music+, Tower Records and finally Virgin. Younger kids will never know or understand the shared communal experience of going to a record store.

candle dripping - we made lots of these wine bottle drip candles - in multi colors. Usually chianti bottles with the straw basket.
You just weren't cool if you didn't have a wine bottle covered with drip candle. We didn't have one but we would work on one at the cousins' whenever we went there. Usually it was on a Chianti bottle. MJ
Multi-colored drip candles on old wine bottles
candle dripping in an empty wine bottle
Another pinner said: You just weren't cool if you didn't have a wine bottle covered with drip candle. I say: I must have been cool because I had one of these! And how I got a wine bottle in MY house back then mystifies me. I probably had mine in a coke bottle. haha :)
Did you ever make one of these? Didn't everyone? Every dorm room I had was filled with these. Chianti bottles worked best.
how a photograph album used to be...
