Orion ©2013 Ruth B. McDowell From Ruth McDowell: "Here in Colrain, the night sky is very dark and the constellation Orion is shines out between the bare branches of the maple trees outside my bedroom window all winter long. I've collected buttons for years: this quilt used just about half of my shell buttons. The different sizes of the pieced silk stars and the different sizes of the buttons are somewhat related to the magnitude of the stars they represent."

Within the rock, translucent golden crystals of a mineral called olivine gleamed among a silvery honeycomb of nickel-iron. | Fukang Meteorite: Discovered in 2000, in the Gobi Desert in China's Xinjiang Province. It is a pallasite; a type of iron meteorite, quite rare, made out of large olivine crystals in an iron-nickel matrix. Olivine is a magnesium iron silicate, quite common in our planet’s subsurface, but which weathers fast when exposed to the surface. Pallasites are extremely rare, (only about 1% of all meteorites). Slices from the Fukang mass, as in this photo, are reminiscent of stained glass windows.

Very real Hubble images that look anything but

"Starry Night," Vincent van Gogh's famous painting, is renowned for its bold whorls of light sweeping across a raging night sky. Although this image of the heavens came only from the artist's restless imagination, a new picture from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope bears remarkable similarities to the van Gogh work, complete with never-before-seen spirals of dust swirling across trillions of miles of interstellar space. This image, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on February 8, 2004, is Hubble's latest view of an expanding halo of light around a distant star, named V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon). The illumination of interstellar dust comes from the red supergiant star at the middle of the image, which gave off a flashbulb-like pulse of light two years ago. V838 Mon is located about 20,000 light-years away from Earth in the direction of the constellation Monoceros, placing the star at the outer edge of our Milky Way galaxy. Called a light echo, the expanding illumination of a dusty cloud around the star has been revealing remarkable structures ever since the star suddenly brightened for several weeks in early 2002. Though Hubble has followed the light echo in several snapshots, this new image shows swirls or eddies in the dusty cloud for the first time. These eddies are probably caused by turbulence in the dust and gas around the star as they slowly expand away. The dust and gas were likely ejected from the star in a previous explosion, similar to the 2002 event, which occurred some tens of thousands of years ago. The surrounding dust remained invisible and unsuspected until suddenly illuminated by the brilliant explosion of the central star two years ago. The Hubble telescope has imaged V838 Mon and its light echo several times since the star's outburst in January 2002, in order to follow the constantly changing appearance of the dust as the pulse of illumination continues to expand away from the star at the spe

The map shows earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater since 1898; each is marked in a lightning-bug hue that glows brighter with increasing magnitude. The overall effect is both beautiful and arresting, revealing the silhouettes of Earth's tectonic boundaries in stark, luminous swarms of color. The map's maker is John Nelson, the user experience and mapping manager for IDV Solutions, a data visualization company.
This stupendous World Map of Earthquakes Since 1898, is beautiful viewing as it shows the rings of fire around this globe.

During the Cretaceous, 139-65 million years ago, shallow seas covered much of the southern United States. These tropical waters were productive–giving rise to tiny marine plankton with carbonate skeletons which overtime accumulated into massive chalk formations. The chalk, both alkaline and porous, lead to fertile and well-drained soils in a band, mirroring that ancient coastline and stretching across the now much drier South. This arc of rich and dark soils is called the Black Belt.

Globular cluster NGC 1850; ~163,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud in Dorado: surrounded by nebula-like material akin to Star Trek shields, believed to be generated during supernova events throughout it’s history. It is actually 2 clusters: main one; large, sprawling structure near the bottom corner is a second, much smaller cluster - part of the main cluster (i.e.gravitationally bound with the larger) comprising both massive, hot blue stars smaller, cooler red stars.
