Mount Rushmore ~ The fireworks are shot off the top of the busts. The 4 Presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) took 14 years to sculpt from the 5,725-foot peak. Finished in 1941, the "Shrine of Democracy" cost about 1 million and is considered priceless.
Sylvan Lake, known as the "crown jewel" of Custer State Park, is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam across Sunday Gulch,it offers picnic areas, rock climbing, small rental boats, swimming, and hiking trails. It is also popular as a starting point for excursions to Harney Peak and The Needles.
