WELLMAN BRAUD was a famous jazz musician & bandleader, who became a professional musician at age 12. He played the violin, trombone, tuba and is most noted for playing the upright bass. He is the pioneer of the rhythmic slap upright bass style that changed the sound of jazz, resulting in most bands of his time switching from the use of a tuba to the upright bass. Braud played with a host of professional musicians and was the 1st string bass player in the Ellington Orchestra.
