This type of writing prompt allows students to choose from a wide variety of things to write about and should only be used if a student is stuck on what to write about. When students take a standardized writing test they are provided with one or two writing prompts that they must write about. When students are not given the freedom to write about what interests them than their writing does not reflect what the students actually writing skills are. This colorful poster of writing ideas perfectly depicts what was described in Chapter 5 of Fletcher and Portalupi. During the 30-40 minute writing time of a Writer's Workshop, there will inevitably be at least one student with a blank paper who can't think of a single thing to write about. This poster provides those students with great writing ideas and topics. It will help students to recall memories they have about birthdays, vacations, friends, animals, recess, boo-boos, and many more that they can then turn into stories, poems, or songs. Fletcher and Portalupi mention several questions to ask students to help them discover writing topics, like whether or not they play sports, what (if anything) do they collect, if they have ever been to the hospital, etc. Posters such as this can serve as a springboard to help students generate topics, especially if they are stuck. Depending on it's size, this poster could be displayed in the Writer's Workshop center or placed in each student's Writing folder, so that they can refer to it at any time. Of course, not all students will need to use a paper like this, but it is very helpful for those who do need it. I will certainly use something like this in my classroom.
