The Ainu population is concentrated in the northern islands of modern Japan. In 1899, the Japanese government passed an act labeling the Ainu as former aborigines, with the idea they would assimilate—this resulted in the land the Ainu people lived on being taken by the Japanese government, while they were denied status of an indigenous group. Finally a 2008 resolution recognized the Ainu people as "an indigenous people with a distinct language, religion and culture".
