Heinz Maier’s Water Drops

Water Drops by Heinz Maier - Heinz Maier is an amateur who started taking pictures at the end of 2010. Fascinated by the art and technique, he says photography is the best way for him to find relax during his free time. Based in Germany, he’s been experimenting macro photography, mostly with insects and water drops. He works with a special set and uses dyed water to give these drops a surreal aspect at the moment of shooting. Written by Laura Gonzalez

The story behind one of the greatest nature pictures of all time

the current greatest nature picture of all time - woodpecker mounted by baby weasel - photo by Martin Le-May

Amateur night sky photographer Adam Brooks sent us this image on July 25. Covering roughly 520 square miles in south and middle Wales, Brecon Beacons National Park is a diverse area of moorlands and mountains, including the Brecon Beacons mountain range, which runs through the center.

A rare photo captured the Northern Lights and Milky Way in the same image. It was snapped by an amateur photographer, who also points out a third visual surprise -- a meteor streaking across the sky. It was taken in Ifjord, Finmark, Norway. (Courtesy Caters News)

Min-Hsiung Huang Tainan, Taiwan Grand Prize, Amateur   Huang’s arresting image is a tribute to his perseverance: Three years ago, he built a photo blind on the bank of a pond in a local wildlife refuge. He has since spent countless hours photographing the birds—particularly common kingfishers—that feed there. The photographer “tried many ways and thousands of times” before he successfully made this photo using a fast shutter speed and manual focus.

Inside the Vatican Museum in Rome, you'll find the Bramante Staircase. Designed as a double helix by Giuseppe Momo in 1932, it has become one of the most recognizable and photographed spiral staircases in the world.
